Earn-A-Bike Program COVID-19 Update

COVID-19 has impacted many of the Heart of the City programs including the Earn-A-Bike Program.  After a full closure of just over 5 weeks, volunteers provided “curbside” repairs while our patrons stayed outside. Services were transitioned to back inside the building a month ago to allow guests with masks to bring their bikes inside. While inside, they wait in a socially-distanced setting. The total number of people allowed inside at the same time is limited to ten. Guest clients are asked to remain outside the shop area in deference to Heart of the City volunteer mechanics (most of whom are retired). Guest clients without masks continue to receive curbside repairs. The Earn-A-Bike Program is currently open on Friday mornings from 9-12.

Volunteers of the Earn-A-Bike Program are trying to do all repairs, but have been greatly impacted by the ongoing national bike shortage. Given that new bikes are not available for purchase, the trickle down effect is that fewer bikes are being donated. In addition, there is a massive scarcity in repair parts. The program is becoming very limited in certain items, but are scavenging everything that can found or recovered.

Funding is needed now and is much appreciated to restock our supplies and parts. Parts and supplies will help prepare our clients' bikes for winter so they have transportation during the cold weather. Please click here to donate.
